How to Swaddle a Baby

You will need:
  • two large blankets
  • a roll of string
  • duct tape (optional)
Directions:

Step 1: Wrap the blankets around the baby like wrapping a burrito
Step 2: Tie the string to hold down the little Houdini's arms
Step 3: Use the duct tape to lock down any weakness in steps 1 & 2

We really wanted do this just once for a funny picture, but figured if we did and put it online someone would call CPS on us.  Just to be clear, we don't actually do this, although at 3am, I did think about it.  We do use two blankets- she is a super strong squirmer, plus it's cold! There's an 80% chance of snow tomorrow, no foolin'!

A couple questions for the experienced parents out there-
My What to Expect book says to stop swaddling at a month- thoughts?
When does the random flailing end?

  1. I swaddled Avila until she was 5 month old. (I left one arm out at around 3 months.) She just slept so much better that way. Once I realized that the swaddling was restricting vs. helping (you'll know - it's one of those mom things) I stopped. Just follow your instincts! PS: follow your instincts on everything else, too. Books are good for reference but your gut mommy feeling will be your best guide.

    I want to meet her!!!!!!!!!

  3. Random flailing will never end! =) We swaddled John for a long time! He really needed it because he would rub his face and wake himself up. I probably did it for at least 7 or 8 months. What really helped us was this snug-n-tug wrap: http://www.gomamagodesigns.com/products/snug-tug.html
It was the best velcro wrap that we tried and it actually kept him in. Plus it is wide at the bottom so that their legs can spread out, which is supposed to be good for their hip development. I agree with Anna and Kristine - go with your gut!

  4. We didn't swaddle AV for long because when we did she would squirm and grunt in her sleep until she got her arms out. So, we just wrapped the blankie tight around her body and called it good. Flailing, I'm with Linds. It's a good thing AV has crib bars to keep her contained. Otherwise I think she would be all over her room while she sleeps.
